Legend pays the price for failure to cooperate in FIFA investigation.
Former Germany and Bayern Munich legend Franz Beckenbauer has been banned from all football activity for 90 days by governing body FIFA, according to the Daily Mirror.
The World Cup winner has been sanctioned by the world’s governing body for his failure to cooperate in an investigation into the alleged corruption over Qatar’s controversial 2022 World Cup bid.
The 68-year-old refused to speak to ethics prosecutor Michael Garcia, who reportedly tried to contact the former defender twice last week.
Ex-Bayern centre-back Beckenbauer was a voting member of FIFA’s executive committee all the way back in 2010 when Qatar was awarded the right to host the tournament for the 2022 tournament.
Earlier this month it was alleged that Qatar won the bid through bribes to the organisation in the region of £3m.
The former vice-president of FIFA, Mohamed bin Hammam, was alleged to have fixed a series of secret meetings with the Qatari Royal Family, and at least seven members of the organisation’s executive committee, though it remains unclear as to their identities.
There have been calls to strip the Arab state of the tournament a relocate it to one of their competitors.
