Liverpool striker struggling to make Uruguay’s opener with Costa Rica.
Luis Suarez is enduring a strenuous training regime as he attempts to prove his fitness ahead of Uruguay’s opening World Cup contest on Saturday, including working triple shifts, reports the BBC.
The Liverpool forward was forced into keyhole surgery at the end of May as he was suffering with a problem in his left knee. This was a minor operation and he is back in training, but it has taken a lot of effort from the 27-year-old for him to return to fitness so quickly.
His international team-mate Cristian Rodriguez described Suarez’s lengthy training schedule over recent days: “He is very focused. He is working in double and triple shifts and we hope to have him with us soon.”
The Uruguay manager, Oscar Tabarez, is uncertain as to whether his star player will be available when his side take on Costa Rica on Saturday afternoon in Group D of the World Cup.
“As we have no set deadlines, I don’t know if we’ll have him for the first match, for the second, for the third,” said Tabarez.
“If it were up to me, Suarez would play tomorrow.”
Suarez is absolutely crucial to Uruguay’s hopes of success after he finished as the top scorer in the South American World Cup qualifying section with 11 goals, including four in one contest against Chile. His 11 strikes were five more than any of his team-mates during the qualification process.
