Arsenal on the verge of completing a deal for Mexican attacker Carlos Vela, after the club decided to activate the £3.5m clause in his contract to bring him back to the Emirates.

The Gunners inserted a clause in the 25-year-old’s contract when he left Arsenal to join Real Sociedad in 2012, and following his excellent season in La Liga, Arsene Wenger’s club have decided to take up the option to bring Vela back to North London, reports the Express.

Real Sociedad’s president Jokin Aperribay confirmed the deal, claiming: “Arsenal have informed us that Vela would be with them next season.”

In Spain last term, Vela finally started to fulfil the talent which encouraged Arsenal to bring him to Europe when he was just 17-years-old. He scored 16 goals in La Liga, and registered 12 assists as well, despite predominantly starting from the right wing.

To reach double figures for both goals and assists puts Vela in pretty elite company, alongside the likes of Luis Suarez, Marco Reus, Wayne Rooney, and Alexis Sanchez.

He will provide Wenger with a wide option, or as another central striker. With Nicklas Bendtner leaving on a free, and Yaya Sanogo having yet to score a goal for the club – the £3.5m deal seems incredibly shrewd.

Vela has promised Arsenal fans that he’ll do his best to make the move a success, as well.

“Arsenal gave me the opportunity to come to Europe when I was 17. I didn’t have as many opportunities as I expected and I had to try new options. If I have to return to London, I will try to make things in a different way so what happened in the past won’t be repeated again,” he said.
