Gunners look to unwanted Spain international.
Arsenal are preparing to make a move for Liverpool’s unwanted goalkeeper Pepe Reina after the Spaniard returned to Merseyside after a loan spell in Serie A with Napoli, according to the Daily Express.
The Italian side were keen to keep hold of the Spain international, but Liverpool’s asking price was higher than they were willing to pay for the 31-year-old. This leaves the stopper in an awkward position at Anfield as he is out-of-favour but struggling to move away from the club.
Arsenal could be about to come to his rescue as they are looking for added competition in the goalkeeping department since the departure of Lukasz Fabianski to Swansea earlier in the summer.
It is unclear as to whether Arsene Wenger would want Reina to come in as his new first-choice number one or simply to act as backup for Wojciech Szczesny. If the latter were the case then it is unlikely that Reina would be happy to complete a move to North London simply to sit to the bench there.
Whether Wenger can persuade the former Barcelona and Villarreal keeper to join the Gunners or not, he is almost certain to depart Anfield this summer. His chances of taking the gloves from current number one Simon Mignolet are slim and the Reds have even been linked with Swansea stopper Michel Vorm.
