Former striker continues to battle disease.
Former Liverpool striker Ian St John has revealed that he has been diagnosed with cancer, again, despite having both his bladder and prostate removed in recent weeks as a result of the disease, reports the Daily Mirror.
The Scot had been battling bladder cancer for the last few years but had hoped his health problems were over after heavy surgery. Unfortunately the disease has not been entirely eradicated and he is set to go under the knife again, although to perform a less serious operation.
St John, who turned out for the Reds for a decade from 1961-71, scoring 118 goals in that time, told the Daily Mirror: “The prognosis is not good because I’ve got to go back, but if they can sort it this time, then hopefully…”
“I’ve had bladder cancer for the last two or three years but it spread into my prostate and therefore the decision was made to remove both of them. That was done 8-10 weeks ago.
“There is nothing you can do about it other than battle on. There is no point in crying about it and saying ‘poor me’, you just battle on.”
St John, who is 76-years-old, also appeared 21 times for Scotland in a glittering career, scoring nine goals for his country. During his lengthy spell with Liverpool he won the First Division twice and the FA Cup on one occasion. He also went on to manage both Motherwell and Portsmouth after retiring from playing.
