Owner Mike Ashley and managing director Lee Charnley have been in negotiations with Gomis’ representatives and it is understood only minor details need to be ironed out to conclude the transfer – which they hope can be completed on Monday at the earliest.

There had also been some significant interest from Turkish giants Galatasaray, as the club were thought to be willing to meet the 28-year-old’s £100,000 per week wage demands.

Gomis had been expected to leave the French giants back in the January transfer window as Newcastle, Cardiff and Swansea City all kept tabs on him, but the Premier League sides all decided to keep their distance in order to make a move for him during the summer when they could waive a transfer fee.

The powerful striker first made a name for himself with Saint Etienne back in 2004, but sealed a big money move to Lyon in 2009 where he has gone on to notch 62 goals in 172 appearances.

However, despite having 12 caps for France to his name he failed to make the cut into Didier Deschamps’ final squad for the World Cup this month.
