The 25-year-old has been heavily linked with a return to the Emirates Stadium this summer, having only left the club in 2012 following a seven year stint in north London.
The Gunners inserted a buy-back clause in Vela’s contract, meaning they can take him back to the Emirates for a meagre £3.3m.
However, they now look to have a battle on their hands as La Liga champions Atletico Madrid line up their own move for the diminutive forward.
Friday’s edition of Marca carries a front-page story of the reported interest, titled: “Vela announces Atletico deal.”
It continues “The Mexican striker confirms the La Liga champions has made him an “irresistible” proposal.”
Atleti coach Diego Simeone is said to be looking out for a replacement to star striker Diego Costa over the coming weeks as he nears a move to Chelsea and has apparently targeted both Vela and Blues striker Romelu Lukaku, too.
