The Benfica stopper has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford for the past year after being watched by the club’s scouting network on numerous occasions, but he had been tipped lately to snub a move to the Premier League in favour of joining up with Andre Villas-Boas in Russia.
Zenit are prepared to meet the £16.5m transfer activation clause in Garay’s contract and would prefer to conclude a deal for the 27-year-old before he meets up with Argentina on international duty ahead of the World Cup.
Garay currently has just one year remaining on his deal at the Estadio da Luz, but his former side Real Madrid will benefit from receiving 50% of any money the Portuguese giants make due to a sell on clause.
Garay made 43 appearances for Benfica this season, scoring six goals in the process.
