Reds want to bring midfield ace Grimes to Anfield…
Liverpool are keen on signing Exeter City starlet Matt Grimes, according to the Daily Star.
Exeter endured a disappointing season, finishing 16th in League Two – just five points clear of the relegation zone.
One positive from their poor campaign was the emergence of teenage midfielder Grimes.
The 18-year-old, who made his debut in August, featured in 35 league games and was named as the club’s player of the season.
His form has not gone unnoticed, with the likes of Sunderland, Norwich City and Bristol City all sending scouts to watch him.
Liverpool appear to be leading the race for Grimes’ signature though, with manager Brendan Rodgers hoping to use his positive relations with the Devon club.
Rodgers’ son, Anton, who now plays for Oldham Athletic, spent a month-long loan spell at Exeter last season while he was on the books of Brighton & Hove Albion.
The Reds boss is said to be on good terms with many members of Exeter’s backroom staff.
Exeter will be keen to keep hold of Grimes, but they are unlikely to put up much of a fight if Liverpool make a significant bid.
Grimes may sign for Liverpool this summer and then return to St James Park on a season-long loan.
