Papakouli Diop says racist abuse is common in Spanish football and “has to stop”.
There were unpleasant scenes during Levante’s 2-0 win over La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid on Sunday evening.
Levente midfielder Papakouli Diop taunted the visiting Atletico supporters at the final whistle by dancing in front of them.
The Senegal international was retaliating after being the subject of racial abuse throughout the game, which saw Atletico concede momentum in the title race.
In the video below, which shows Diop’s post-game dance, several fans can be seen making monkey gestures.
After the incident, Diop told Canal+: “They did monkey gestures at me, that’s why I danced, to take away the importance. It happens to me at many grounds. It has to stop.”
Diop: “Me hicieron el gesto del mono, por eso bailé, para quitarle importancia. Me pasa en muchos campos y hay que acabar con eso”.
