The Red Devils have joined the race for Lyon skipper Maxime Gonalons…
Manchester United have added yet another midfielder to their potential summer transfer target shortlist…
David Moyes’ side could make a move for Lyon’s 25-year-old Frenchman Maxime Gonalons, who has won six caps for his national side, reports talkSPORT.
Gonalons has spent his entire career with Lyon, and he’s the club captain. As a result, Lyon would much rather keep hold of the midfield anchorman, but due to their financial difficulties, may be forced into cashing in on their prize asset.
The midfielder prefers to play the anchorman role, and is content to sit deep in midfield and protect his back four. He is physically mobile, hard working and strong – but crucially, has the technical skills and qualities to retain possession. In this respect, Gonalons provides the side an excellent defensive platform, but can also start attacks from deep with zipped, intricate passes.
It’s no secret that United desperately need to strengthen their central midfield this summer. Ryan Giggs is approaching 41, Tom Cleverley has been criticised all season, Michael Carrick is fairly immobile, while Marouane Fellaini has massively failed to live up to last summer’s mammoth transfer fee.
Gonalons would add bite and physicality to the midfield, and could prove a sensible signing, that wouldn’t necessarily break the bank.
