The 23 year old Bosnian has impressed greatly this term and has experienced a new lease of life under boss Rudi Garcia, his displays helping the Stadio Olimpico side to launch a genuine Serie A title push.
Jose Mourinho would appear to be keen on the former Lyon man and this could well be a sign that the Stamford Bridge boss sees Pjanic as a long term replacement for veteran England international Frank Lampard.
Pjanic is into his third season at Roma and will exhibit his talents at the 2014 World Cup finals after aiding his nation’s first qualification for the tournament.
Mourinho is looking to re-shape his Chelsea squad and a number of more experienced members of his playing staff may be on their way out, with Lampard, John Terry and Ashley Cole all out of contract in the summer.
Chelsea are mindful of UEFA’s FFP (Financial Fair Play) guidelines and have an expansive squad that will need to be trimmed ahead of prospective additions and the potential imminent departure of the trio of Englishman would also take some weight off the club’s wage bill, leaving room and finances available for a possible bid for Pjanic.
