CaughtOffside understands that the Dutch international is currently unhappy with Hamburg’s current league position as they sit second from bottom with only 16 points from 20 games and is already plotting his escape just in case the club cannot manage to salvage anything between now and May.

Reds boss Rodgers had been looking at trying to open talks with the 31-year-old during the January transfer window, but the player at that point was keen to stay and help the Bundesliga side try and retain their top flight status.

However, he has realised that at 31 time is not on his side and as he prepares for what could be his final major tournament at the World Cup this summer he has targeted another roll of the dice in the Champions League next season and may himself look to resurrect negotiations with the Anfield side.

The Reds are known to be looking at brining in some fresh talent to their midfield as a shortage of numbers, coupled with some troubling injury concerns have meant that the club have seen their challenge for the Premier League title falter, but a recent mini-revival has meant that their quest to qualify for next season’s Champions League is still well on course.

Van Der Vaart is already well acquainted with the English top flight having spent two seasons with Tottenham Hotspur between 2010-12. Whilst at White Heart Lane he managed to bag himself 28 goals in 78 appearances, and was a driving force behind their own European campaigns.

However, he abruptly left the north London club in order to return home for family reasons, but a short term stay in the Northwest could appeal as his career draws to a close.

It is thought that a cut price deal could be struck because of the player’s age and Hamburg’s precocious league position, though an exact fee would become clearer once their league status has been confirmed.

So far this season Van Der Vaart has managed to wrack up eight goals in 20 appearances for Hamburg, but he missed a month of action at the tail end of November with an injury.
