The Gunners have been trying to finalise a shock move for the 31-year-old during transfer deadline day, and according to sources close to the deal, it is now “80 per cent” completed, with there even being a chance the player could feature in the club’s Premier League encounter with Crystal Palace at the Emirates on Sunday afternoon.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has decided to move for Kallstrom after being priced out of a move for first-choice target Julian Draxler of Schalke 04, with the Bundesliga outfit demanding a fee of around £34m for the highly rated Germany international, a figure that the Frenchman is not prepared to fork out for such an inexperienced player.
And with the club currently beset by a number of untimely injuries to key players such as Theo Walcott, Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere, Wenger has been forced into the market in order to add reinforcements to his squad for the second half of the campaign.
