Lyon coach Remi Garde is keeping his fingers crossed that midfield ace Clement Grenier will not be heading to Newcastle United as a replacement for Yohann Cabaye, Sky Sports reports.

Garde was asked about what the future would hold for the attacking midfielder after it emerged that Cabaye would be holding talks with Paris Saint Germain over a possible move.

United boss Alan Pardew already had his eye on the 23-year-old even before Cabaye looked to be going, and the Magpies are now thought to be weighing up a move to test Les Gones’ resolve.

However, Garde is in an optimistic move over the player’s future as he saw Maxime Gonalons reject a move to Napoli over the summer, and he believes that Grenier will stay put too.

“The Clement case, I have not discussed with my president. You tell me the interest of Newcastle,” he said.

“For Clement, I think it will be the same as with Max [Gonalons].”

When Grenier was quizzed about Newcastle’s interest he said; “I have only just learned about [Newcastle’s] interest from the press, like you.

“I have no idea what can be said or done at this time. At one point, the president said that if a good offer is made for me this winter, he would look at it.

“I do not know if he received an offer or not and I’m not at all thinking about it.

“For the moment, it is not in my head. I have goals with Olympique Lyonnais for the end of the season, in the short term. I focus on it.

“The World Cup is one of my goals. It is in a small corner of my mind. Is it better for me to stay in Lyon? For the moment, yes. There are still many goals for me with Lyon.”
