Brendan Rodgers had hoped to add 21-year-old Salah – dubbed the ‘Egyptian Messi’ – to his squad this month but the FC Basel winger is heading to Chelsea as a replacement for Juan Mata.

Despite the disappointment, Reds manager Rodgers is still keen to add a fresh attacking option to his squad before the end of the month and will move for Ince if the former Liverpool player shows a willingness to return to Anfield.

Rodgers is keen to lift some of the creative burden from the shoulders of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge but has been unimpressed with Chelsea loanee Victor Moses.

Ince, 21, left Liverpool after making just one senior appearance for the club but was linked with a return a year ago after impressing in his first year-and-a-half with the Tangerines. The Premier League club could not agree a fee, however, despite having a sell-on agreement that would effectively reduce Ince’s price by 20 per cent.

The right winger’s contract is up in the summer and he is almost certain to follow father Paul out of Bloomfield Road in the summer if not before.

His father’s sacking by text message this week is thought to have upset Ince and strengthened his resolve to leave in the January transfer window rather than the summer’s.

AS Monaco are interested in the England under-21 international and Paul, who spent two seasons with Inter Milan, has encouraged his son to move abroad.

But if Liverpool do move for Ince, the prospect of lining-up alongside Suarez and Sturridge may prove too much to turn down.
