Reports in the player’s native France suggest that the Blues are still trailing both Monaco and Inter Milan in the race for the £11m rated centre back as they have yet to meet the French side’s asking price despite rumours earlier in the week claiming that he had all but agreed personal terms with the club.
Both Monaco and Inter are believed to have met that asking price, though, and have left Chelsea behind as they are still attempting to negotiate a fee.
Zouma has reportedly made his desire to join either Chelsea or Inter known to his current employers, but with some heavy spending power behind them the Principality side are far from out of the running.
St Etienne had been hoping to drive the asking price up to the €20m mark, and then have the player back on loan for the rest of the campaign, but that could be a stumbling block for Monaco as they look to improve their defence immediately.
However, Chelsea could be open to that arrangement as they still boast the likes of John Terry, Gary Cahill and David Luiz in their ranks.
