The relegation threatened west London club are currently second from bottom of the Premier League table going into the Christmas period, four points from West Ham United and safety, with recently appointed Cottagers head coach Rene Meulensteen understood to be desperate to strengthen his porous back four next month.
And one of the players that the Dutchman is said to be targeting to bring to Craven Cottage on loan at the turn of the year is his compatriot from Old Trafford, someone Meulensteen knows well from their time working together at the Theatre of Dreams.
The one-time Netherlands Under-20 international has only been with the Premier League champions since August 2012, when previous Red Devils manager Sir Alex Ferguson brought Buttner to the north west from Eredivisie outfit Vitesse Arnhem on a five-year deal for a fee of just £5 million.
