Saints hone in on Italian stopper.
Southampton are set to renew their interest in highly rated Cagliari centre back Davide Astori when the transfer window reopens in January, the Daily Mirror reports.
The 26-year-old had been on Mauricio Pochettino’s wish list over the summer before they managed to land Dejan Lovren from French side Lyon instead.
He had originally been a target for former manager Nigel Adkins, but Pochettino is believed to still be interested in bringing him on board and will make enquiries into his availability nearer to the new year.
However, the centre-back, who has five caps with the Italian national team, has also caught the eye of both Everton and AC Milan, and Southampton could face some stiff competition to land his signature. Manchester United had also been credited with an interest in him too, but they have reportedly moved on to other targets.
Astori began his career with AC Milan but failed to make a single first team appearance and made the move to Cagliari in 2008 after two short loan spells in the lower reaches of the Italian football pyramid.
He has made over 150 appearances for the Sardinian club in that time, and he is not expected to be there for much longer.
