French club confirm striker stay.
Newcastle United look set to miss out on Lyon striker Bafetimbi Gomis after the French club confirmed that he will now be staying at the Stade Gerland, Sky Sports reports.
The France international had been the subject of some heavy speculation this summer and had been tipped to move on to the Premier League with the Magpies holding talks with the player.
Swansea City were also credited with more than a passing interest, but talks with the Welsh side failed to materialise and the proposed move to St James’ Park broke down late on.
A number of German and Turkish clubs had also been circling the 27-year-old, who is now entering the final year of his contract in France, though he will now be staying put until January at least and will be welcomed back into the squad after being sidelined over a dispute concerning his future.
Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas said: “We have to face facts, there isn’t an offer that Bafe has accepted despite (interest from) the English and the Turks and Lyon need a player like him.
“It was logical that Bafe would not reach the end of his contract, but if it is not possible (to extend) we have no more time to reinforce the team, so he will be our reinforcement.”
