French side now hope to keep star striker.
Ligue 1 giants Lyon are now hoping to be able to tie Bafetimbi Gomis to a new deal just weeks after claiming they wanted to sell him, Sky Sports reports.
Reports earlier this month had suggested that Newcastle United had agreed an initial deal to bring him to St James’ Park, but for one reason or another a move failed to materialise, and there are now claims that the Magpies have pulled out of the running altogether.
The French club had said that they needed to move Gomis on to get him off the wage bill at the Stade Gerland, but it now appears that coach Remi Garde is hoping to secure him to a new contract altogether.
Chairman Jean-Michel Aulas has confirmed a contract offer is on the table and is hopeful of tying the France international striker down to a new deal.
“He has had a contract extension proposition in his hands for months,” he told L’Equipe.
“I have no personal problem with Bafe. I am waiting for an outcome. We have to find a solution that could satisfy three parties.
“The most important thing is to have opened doors as the chairman did.”
