The Premier League’s top scorer thinks title will stay at Old Trafford…
Manchester United’s star striker Robin Van Persie thinks his side will win the Premier League again this year, reports The Daily Mail.
The brilliant Dutch striker scored twice today in his side’s 2-0 Community shield victory against Wigan Athletic, and is confident he will carry on in the same rich vein when the Premier League starts next weekend.
“We’re doing really well and I believe in this team,” he told ITV.
“We are the champions and based on that we are clear favourites,” added the 29-year-old hitman, who bagged 26 in the league last term.
United have endured a difficult pre-season to say the least, and the transition from the Sir Alex Ferguson era to the David Moyes one has been rocky. Not only have United so far missed out on top transfer targets like Thiago and Cesc Fabregas, they have struggled during most of their friendly matches, falling to embarrassing defeats to Yokohama and Sevilla.
To confound this, the Wayne Rooney saga has been a constant dark cloud hanging over the club. The England man was not in the squad that beat Wigan today, but has been selected by Roy Hodgson for the international friendly against Scotland. Chelsea have had two bids rejected for the striker , who still could hand in a transfer request before the end of the month.
Close-rivals Manchester City have invested heavily this summer, and Chelsea will undoubtedly be a formidable side under returning boss Jose Mourinho. Van Persie is desperate for Rooney to stay at the club, but regardless, believes his side should be considered be favourites for the title.
“I believe in this team and I believe that we will compete until the end again,” he added.
