St James’ Park side handed chance to sign Cameroon international ace.
Newcastle United have reportedly been offered a chance to sign veteran striker Samuel Eto’o in a cut-price £5m deal according to the Metro.
The 32 year old is one of many star performers Russian Premier League side Anzhi Makhachkala are looking to offload as the club look to make significant cut-backs after investing huge sums in recent seasons.
Eto’o is the world’s most highly rated footballer, currently earning an incredible £350k a week, and whilst the Magpies will struggle to offer the Cameroon international anything like that sort of salary they have been offered the former Barcelona & Inter Milan man for just £5m.
Moves by sporting director Joe Kinnear to bring in additions have stuttered, Bafetimbi Gomis and Darren Bent have both been targeted but not secured by the St James’ Park side so there could well still be a need for striking additions, though Loic Remy has been brought in from QPR on a loan deal.
Bringing a player of Eto’o’s stature would be a massive statement of intent and one that owner Mike Ashley may well consider.
Samuel Eto’o first emerged on the scene at Real Madrid but failed to make the grade at the Bernabeu and was moved on to Real Mallorca where he honed his craft. 69 goals in five seasons earned a move to Barcelona where he well and truly put himself on the map as one of the deadliest finishers in world football.
At the Nou Camp Eto’o racked up 129 goals in 201 appearances, helping the Catalan side to three La Liga titles and two Champions League triumphs.
A move to Inter Milan saw Eto’o scored 53 goals in two seasons during which time he helped the San Siro side to a historic treble under the guidance of Jose Mourinho before a move to Anzhi in August 2011.
