Here are ten more transfers that are likely to happen this summer.
Leighton Baines- Everton to Manchester United
Baines is one of the most gifted full-backs currently playing in the Premier League and has had a huge role in Everton’s recent success under David Moyes. Baines was one of the Moyes most trusted lieutenants at Goodison Park and now the Scot wants to bring the 28 year old with him to his new job at Manchester United. One of the many issues that Moyes needs to address at Old Trafford is that fact that the clubs first choice left back, Patrice Evra may need replacing sooner rather than later. The Frenchman is approaching the end of his career and it is thought that fresh legs are needed in that position.
Moyes wants Baines to fill Evra’s role and has already submitted a bid to his former club to try and buy the defender. However, Everton rejected the bid and have told Moyes that he will need to pay around £18 million to sign the England international. The Scot is set to return to Goodison Park with an improved offer but it is unlikely to be close to Everton’s valuation, meaning both sides are at a stale mate. However, Baines would love the opportunity of working with Moyes again and would like to test himself in the Champions League. If he makes it known to Everton that he wants to leave, the club may have no alternative but to sell.
Ashley Williams- Swansea City to Arsenal
The Welsh defender played a huge role in Swansea’s success last season, leading them to ninth placed finish in the Premier League whilst helping them win the League Cup in February. Williams has matured into one of the Premier League’s most physical centre backs and has shown that he can keep even the best strikers quiet. His excellent performances have led to many of Swansea’s Premier League rivals becoming interested in his services. Arsenal are reportedly the most likely to sign Williams this summer, with Arsene Wenger wanting to bolster his defence for the coming season.
The Frenchman was reluctant to pay Swansea’s £10 million valuation of Williams but has changed his mind now following an injury to Thomas Vermaelen. Williams himself is known to be keen on a move to Arsenal as it would mean that he would have the opportunity of playing in the Champions League. He has already said that he would like to test himself against the very best while he is still playing well.
Yohan Cabaye- Newcastle United to Paris St Germain or Manchester United
Cabaye is regarded as one of the best passes currently playing in the Premier League. He find his target from any distance and has set up many important goals during his time with the Magpies. Despite the club having a difficult 2012/2013 season, Cabaye stock has fallen and several clubs are looking to sign him this summer. The two clubs that are most interested in Cabaye are Paris St Germain and Manchester United.
Red Devils boss David Moyes is desperate to strengthen the clubs midfield this summer and he has identified Cabaye as the sort of player who could replace Paul Scholes, who retired at the end of last season. PSG are eager to bring Cabaye back to France and feel that he could set up plenty of goal scoring opportunities for their new strike partnership of Cavani and Ibrahimovic. It is thought that Cabaye may prefer a move to Manchester United, with the opportunity of replacing the great Paul Scholes too good and opportunity to miss. Newcastle don’t want Cabaye to go but may have no choice but to accept a £20 million bid when one comes in.
Luiz Gustavo- Bayern Munich to Arsenal or Chelsea
Gustavo has spent two disappointing seasons at the Allianz Arena where he hasn’t been able to break into the Champions League winners starting line-up. The German club have already brought in Thiago Alcantara and Mario Gotze this summer, meaning first team opportunities will be even harder to come by next season for Gustavo. This means the midfielder is likely leave Bayern this summer so that he can move to a club that will give him regular first team football.
Gustavo is desperate to be a part of Brazil’s squad for next summers World Cup and will only do that if he is playing regularly for his club. Both Arsenal and Chelsea are known to be interested in signing Gustavo, with both Arsene Wenger and Jose Mourinho keen to strengthen their midfields this summer. The Brazilian is interested on a move to the Premier League and would still be playing in the Champions League with whichever club he chooses as both the Blues and the Gunners are in the competition next season, although Arsenal need to get through the final qualifying round.
James McCarthy- Wigan Athletic to Everton
McCarthy was one of Wigan’s shining lights last season as they won the FA Cup, beating heavy favourites Manchester City in the final. However, the midfielder couldn’t stop Wigan’s relegation from the Premier League, which was confirmed a few days after the Latics FA Cup triumph. Since then, Roberto Martinez has left Wigan to takeover the managers hot seat at Everton and the Spaniard is thought to be keen on bringing McCarthy with him.
Martinez has already signed a number of Wigan players but McCarthy would surely be the most expensive if he were to make the move to Goodison Park. Wigan chairman Dave Whelan is demanding £20 million for the midfielder but Martinez believes that he can land McCarthy for £15 million. The midfielder would relish the opportunity of working with Martinez again and would also enjoy being back in the Premier League. There is no doubt that he is too good for the Championship and he could soon be back in the top flight at his former managers new club.
Darren Bent- Aston Villa to Newcastle United or Fulham
Bent was once one of the Premier League’s most prolific strikers, having scored plenty of goals for Sunderland and Tottenham Hotspur. This persuaded Aston Villa to pay £24 million for Bent but he has not lived up to that price tag. He spent most of last season on the bench, with Paul Lambert preferring to use Christan Benteke up front. Bent seems certain to leave Villa Park this summer for a fraction of what Villa paid for him and he has even been told by Lambert that he has no future at the club.
Both Newcastle and Fulham are eager to sign Bent, with Magpies boss Alan Pardew wanting to sign a striker with plenty of Premier League experience. Fulham boss Martin Jol hopes to ease the burden on Dimitar Berbatov by signing Bent. Villa were initially demanding £8 million for Bent but have since lowered their price to £6 million as both Newcastle and Fulham refused to pay their original valuation. Both clubs are considering whether or not to match Villa’s £6 million valuation, with Fulham testing their resolve with a £4 million offer. That was rejected but it seems certain that one of the two clubs will reach an agreement with Villa to buy Bent, who will hope to get more first team opportunities at his new club.
Luka Modric- Real Madrid to Manchester United
Modric was regarded as one of the best creative midfielders during his time at Tottenham. Last summer, he made a big money move to Real Madrid, hoping to win plenty of silverware at the Spanish giants. His time at Madrid hasn’t been a great one however, as he has struggled to adapt to Spanish football. He has also struggled to get into the Madrid first team, with Los Blancos having several creative midfielders on their books.
It will be even harder to Modric to get into the Madrid first team this season following the arrival of Spanish starlet Isco from Malaga. Modric will now have to compete with Isco, Ozil, and Kaka for a starting spot. He is unlikely to get in ahead of the likes of Ozil so he may decide to cut his losses and return to the Premier League. Manchester United are known to be interested in the Croatian and see him as an alternative to Cesc Fabregas, who looks set to stay with Barcelona. At United, Modric would get plenty of first team games and would be right at the centre of David Moyes midfield.
Bafetimbi Gomis- Lyon to Newcastle United
Gomis has been one of the more prolific strikers in French football of late and despite his successful spell with Lyon, it seems that the striker wants to be shown the exit door of the French club. He only has one year remaining on his current contract with Lyon and he has made it clear to the French club that he won’t be signing a new one. This means Lyon must sell the striker of risk losing him for free next summer, something they can’t do due to their current financial problems. Newcastle are the most likely to sign Gomis and the Magpies have already submitted a £7 million offer for the striker.
Lyon originally rejected the bid but they have since had a re-think and decided to accept to the bid, leaving Gomis free to move to Tyneside. Magpies manager Alan Pardew is desperate to strengthen his attack this summer and he will hope that Gomis scores the goals that will propel Newcastle back into the top half of the Premier League table.
Joey Barton- QPR to Marseille
Barton has had an incredibility controversial career, often being in the headlines for all the wrong reasons. Following his sending off on the last day of the 2011/2012 season, Barton was sent on loan to Marseille in disgrace but enjoyed his time in France. However, his loan move has now finished meaning he is back with QPR, who are no longer in the Premier League following their relegation.
It appears that Barton’s return to QPR will be short lived, with the club looking to get Barton off their books in a bid to trim their wage bill. A move back to Marseille appears to be the best option for Barton and the French club are reportedly interested in having the midfielder back on a permanent basis. The midfielder himself has said that he would rather move to Everton, who he supported as a boy. However, that seems unlikely, with many at the Toffees reluctant to bring Barton due to his reputation for causing trouble. Not even his willingness to take a pay cut will see him at Goodison Park next season, meaning a move to Marseille is much more likely.
Peter Odemwingie- West Brom to Cardiff City or Crystal Palace
The striker has had a difficult season at the Hawthorns, having fallen out with pretty much everyone at the club following his actions in the January transfer window. In a bid to force through a move to QPR, Odemwingie turned up at Loftus Road without the permission of West Brom. Odemwingie wasn’t able to complete a move to QPR before the transfer window closed, meaning he had to return to the Hawthorns. Since then, Odemwingie has been side lined, often starting games on the bench. He seems certain to leave this summer, with newly promoted Crystal Palace and Cardiff City interested in signing the striker.
Both clubs want to strengthen their attacking options before the start of the season and think that Odemwingie can score the goals that will save them from relegation. Despite West Brom wanting to get the striker off their books, they are demanding £3 million for Odemwingie, an amount both Cardiff and Palace are reluctant to pay considering the striker is now 32. It seems that West Brom will eventually lower their price for the striker and will let the newly promoted clubs fight it out for the controversial front man.
