Veteran Swede heads back to Scandinavia.
Former Aston Villa defender Olof Mellberg has signed a two-year deal with Danish giants FC Copenhagen, Sky Sports reports.
The 35-year-old has been out of contract since helping Villarreal return to the Spanish top flight last season after spending just a year with the club.
Since leaving Aston Villa in 2008, where he spent seven years making 260 appearances and scoring eight goals, he has toured Europe extensively – taking in stints with Juventus, Olympiakos and finally Villarreal.
He made 29 appearances for El Submarino Amarillo, scoring twice to help them back into the top flight following an unexpected relegation to the Segunda Division in 2011/12.
Copenhagen finished last season’s Danish league as champions and have therefore nailed on their spot in the group stages of the Champions League already.
And the club’s sporting director Carsten V Jensen believes the club are lucky to have signed a player with the experience of the former Aston Villa and Juventus man.
“It is an unusual amount of experience that we have brought to Copenhagen in Olof Mellberg,” Jensen told the club’s official website.
“And through our conversations with him, we are certain that his hunger and winning instinct is still intact and a part of his personal drive.”
