Uruguay will be widely expected to record a big win over minnows Tahiti tonight and book their place in the semi-finals of the Confederations Cup.
Although they lost their opening game to group favourites Spain, they recorded an important win over Nigeria in their second game. With the Africans playing Spain tonight, they probably won’t manage to equal Uruguay’s tally of six points.
Tahiti should not be much opposition for Uruguay, and Oscar Tabarez’s side could give their goal difference a big boost against a side that was comfortably beaten 6-1 by Nigeria and 10-0 by Spain.
It has still been an enjoyable journey for Tahiti in this tournament, with their surprise goal against Nigeria a highlight, and they will take some pride in limiting the damage done by Uruguay’s world class strike force of Edinson Cavani, Luis Suarez and Diego Forlan, even if they are beaten once again.
As they will surely finish as group runners-up, Uruguay will face a tricky tie with host nation Brazil in the semi-finals, as they won group A last night with a 4-2 win over Italy.
