Sunderland have set their sights on AZ Alkmaar striker Jozy Altidore according to Shields Gazette.

Paolo Di Canio is apparently eyeing up the United States national team star as he seeks to beef up an attack that managed just 41 goals in 38 Premier League matches last season.

Black Cats owner Ellis Short hopes to tempt AZ to sell the 23 year old striker for as little as £5m, which seems unlikely given the excellent form the powerful striker has exhibited over the past two seasons.

Altidore failed to impress in his previous stint in the Premier League, when he managed just one goal in 28 Premier League appearances with Hull City during a season long loan spell, however goals have not been in short supply since his move to the Eredivisie.

The New Jersey born marksman has racked up 51 goals in 93 appearances for AZ and helped his side to a domestic cup triumph in the process.

Jozy Altidore would surely be tempted by another chance to impress in the Premier League and interest from a club of the size of Sunderland would be tough to turn down.

Di Canio has already been busy in the summer transfer window bringing in Duncan Watmore, Modibo Diakité, Valentin Roberge, Cabral and David Moberg Karlsson.
