Manchester City are leading the race for Dutch starlet Adam Maher.Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini is understood to be making AZ Alkmaar midfielder Adam Maher a prime target this summer, according to the Daily Mirror.
The Italian manager is keen to add to his squad after a poor summer in the transfer market last year, which he believes has cost his team in this season’s title race.
Maher, 19, has impressed in the Eredevisie this season with eight goals and 10 assists in 32 league matches. His form has already earned him a call-up to the Netherlands national side and attracted the interest of several top clubs around Europe.
City will go head to head with Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham for his signature, but are favourites to sign him as they are most willing to pay the £15.4 million that Alkmaar are demanding for the youngster.
His signing would make sense for City as well, as they are likely to change their squad around this summer, starting perhaps with Samir Nasri, who has failed to live to expectations at the Etihad since joining from Arsenal in 2011. David Silva has also struggled for fitness and form at times this year and Maher would be a strong candidate to play in that attacking midfield role.
Speaking to Goal.com, Maher expressed his desire to move this summer, though he did not reveal who his ideal choice of club would be.
“I will just wait until the summer and see which clubs make a move,” he said. “I will not make a final decision until then.
“I know where I want to go. I’m not saying anything has changed. All I’m saying is that I will just wait and see to find out which clubs make an offer.”
