David Beckham: Waving Goodbye to his Popularity Stateside!
David Beckham’s LA Galaxy team-mate Landon Donovan has launched a stinging attack on the England star, accusing him of a lack of commitment.
Beckham, 33, spent a spell on loan at AC Milan last season, and Donovan believes he has let Galaxy down.
“All that we care about is that he committed to us. As time has gone on, that has not been the case on the field or off the field,” said Donovan.
Beckham’s spokesman declined to respond to Donovan’s comments.
Speaking in a new book called ‘The Beckham Experiment’, the US captain added: “Does the fact that he earns that much more money come into it? Yeah.
“If someone’s paying you more than anybody in the league, more than double anybody in the league, the least we expect is that you show up to every game, whether you are suspended or not. Show up and train hard, show up and play hard.
“Maybe he’s not a leader, maybe he’s not a captain. Fair enough. But at a minimum, you should bust your ass every day and that hasn’t happened.
“I don’t think that’s too much for us to expect. Especially when he’s brought all this on us.” (BBC Sport)
Landon Donovan is spot on. Couldn’t agree more. Whilst you can’t blame David Beckham for trying to resurrect his European Football career there is a way to do it and there is a way NOT to do it, and the man with the self-obsessed wife opted for the latter. He arrived in the US and was met with impossible expectations and there is nothing he can do about the weight placed on his shoulders but when you are given seemingly obscene amounts of money to represent a club but then try your hardest to get out of town then don’t be surprised if people get angry.
Crowds at LA Galaxy games sans Becks have dipped dramatically and they won’t necessarily increase when he returns, other than for the first few weeks when sales of rotten tomatoes will soar in the near vicinity of the stadium.
I strongly suspect that the former Real Madrid and Man United man will barely play another game for the MLS struggler’s and will probably buy himself out of the deal and hope to god that AC Milan decide to bring him back otherwise his dream of a World Cup place next summer could go tits up!
