While Harry Redknapp will have to wait until January to axe players that are surplus to requirements, this is not the case with backroom staff, and there’s been a notable casualty this week.
The Press Association reports that Hans Leitert has left White Hart Lane, despite only being hired as goalkeeping coach in the summer. It must have been difficult for the Austrian to command much respect at the club, with Heurelho Gomes treating the football as though it’s a wet bar of soap for much of the campaign to date. Perhaps his pupil will be following him out of the door in a couple of months time.
A statement on the club’s official website, www.tottenhamhotspur.com, read: “We should like to thank him for his contribution and wish him well. An announcement regarding a new appointment will be made in due course.”
The former Portsmouth and Southampton boss explained: “He’s our number one goalkeeper so he’s got to do the job – we’re relying on him heavily.
“I believe in him and we have to believe in him.
“Obviously he is disappointed with the weekend but his record tells you he is a world-class goalkeeper.
“He has to bounce back from that and turn in a terrific performance. I’m sure he’ll do that. He’s a strong character. It’s up to him now.”
While it’s not beyind the realms of possibility that Gomes will come good for Tottenham, surely Harry Redknapp privately harbours severe doubts about the Brazilian, based on his performances to date? Does anyone think that the departure of Leitert means that Harry is likely to get shot of his current number one as well?
