Harry Redknapp arrived at White Hart Lane knowing full well that he couldn’t make any changes to his squad for several months. However, he must be counting down the weeks until the January transfer window re-opens, so that he can bring in reinforcements, especially in one big problem area!
Surely if the Spurs manager had any belief in Heurelho Gomes’ goalkeeping ability, his comments would have been a little warmer than those made directly after his team’s 2-1 defeat at Craven Cottage on Saturday. His words bore all the hallmarks of someone itching to get shot of the much-maligned Brazilian, whose mistake led to Fulham’s first goal and ultimately cost them the match. The Daily Mail reports that Redknapp might find a replacement at Old Trafford.
Harry Redknapp hopes his long-standing friendship with Sir Alex Ferguson might see Ben Foster arrive in January to solve the Tottenham goalkeeping crisis.
Redknapp is keen to set aside any lingering acrimony over Dimitar Berbatov’s deadline day move to Manchester United from White Hart Lane so Foster could come in on loan and put Heurelho Gomes out of his misery.
‘What can I say?’ said Redknapp.
‘I’ll tell the wife when I get home.
Gomes is a quiet man. His English is OK but he’s not one who’s going to have a long chat with you.
‘But we’ve got to keep believing in him because that’s it, he’s the goalkeeper.
‘It ain’t no good me caning him because I’ve got nothing else.’
Do any Tottenham fans believe that Gomes has a future at the club, or should the Brazilian be sold at the earliest opportunity? While his shot-stopping is pretty decent, supporters’ hearts must be in their mouths every time that he comes for a cross. Ben Foster is a pretty exciting goalkeeping talent who was very good at Watford on loan three seasons ago – can he do a job for Spurs?
