There have been many people linked to the Manchester United manager’s job, with Sir Alex Ferguson likely to stand down in the next couple of seasons. Indeed, many expected Carlos Queiroz to follow in the Scot’s footsteps, although he’s left Old Trafford once again to manage Portugal, a stint which has not begun very well at all.
The Guardian reports that Joe Kinnear is tipping someone else to be in the Old Trafford hotseat – Sunderland manager Roy Keane. While it appears that the Irishman left the club under something of a storm, he’s an immensely popular figure amongst the supporters after helping the team win numerous pieces of silverware. The interim Magpies gaffer sees a United manager-in-waiting on Wearside (Manchester not Newcastle!).
“Without being rude to Sunderland, I’d say Roy is a Manchester United manager in the waiting,” he said.
“I know Roy well. I’ve been in his company in Ireland and I’m not surprised at how well he’s made the transition to management. He’s done the right thing learning his trade where he is but he won’t have any problems managing big-name players because the best in the world still look up to him. I think a few years from now Roy will be an ideal Manchester United manager – if not the Irish national manager.”
Many Magpies and Sunderland supporters will be bemused by the love-in going on between managers ahead of the Tyne – Wear derby, although do Manchester United fans agree that Keano will eventually be ideal for Fergie’s job? After all, this is only his second full season in management, yet he’s proving his credentials at the Stadium of Light.
