It’s often difficult for players when they leave a football club after having plenty of happy memories there. One recalls Patrick Vieira struggling to cope with Arsenal’s decision to sell him to Inter a few seasons ago, while Thierry Henry also has lots of nice things to say about the North London club whenever the Barcelona striker is quizzed about them. It appears the same can be said of a Spanish forward who was a little hit-and-miss during his time at Anfield.
Nevertheless, Liverpool fans are sure to be generous in their applause of Luis Garcia when he returns to Merseyside in the Champions League. The Atletico player admits that there have been occasions when he was still playing under Rafael Benitez, and he’ll be sorry if he scores against the Reds on Wednesday night. According to The Times, Liverpool are a special club in Garcia’s eyes.
“I am always happy to score goals and I am an Atletico player now,” Garcia said. “In my heart I would feel strange, and I would say ‘sorry’ because I wouldn’t feel any joy scoring against Liverpool.
“It makes me happy that Liverpool fans look back and appreciate what I gave to the team. There were times last year when I wished I was back there, when I watched Liverpool games and thought I could add something to the team, I became frustrated just thinking about it.”
Do any Liverpool fans regret the fact that the club decided to release the talented Garcia, or did he fail to cut the mustard at Anfield? On his day, the Spanish pocket dynamo could deliver a world-class performance, although he struggled for consistency, something that was ultimately his downfall.
