Fratton Park has become something of a rehab club for many players. The likes of David James, Sol Campbell, Glen Johnson, Lassana Diarra, Peter Crouch and Jermain Defoe have all signed for Harry Redknapp’s team and kickstarted their footballing career as a result. The Portsmouth manager seems to get the best out of these players that have been sitting on the bench or performing erratically elsewhere. Could he do the same with a certain Liverpool wide-man?
Setanta reports that Redknapp is a fan of Jermaine Pennant, the Reds winger who can’t seem to get any playing minutes for the Merseyside club at the moment. While distancing himself from signing the former Birmingham player, it’s surely possible that this is the sort of player that would benefit the FA Cup holders, especially with Peter Crouch thriving on the service he’d provide.
“I like Pennant,” Redknapp told The News. “He’s a good player, a great crosser of the ball and he’s definitely got quality.
“But I can’t say I have thought about signing him. In fact, I have not thought about anybody really, to be honest.”
He added: “I just need to get on with it now. It’s like any transfer, I’ll see how we are going closer to the time and if we need something.
“You never know, you may get an injury in a certain position, something might need freshening up. “
Liverpool fans, do you think that the club should get shot of Pennant, or can he be an important member of the squad this season? After all, the campaign is still in its formative months, and Benitez might need to call upon the Nottingham lad if the injuries start to mount up. Or should the club just consider selling him for a few million?
