The Independent reckons that Newcastle United have missed out in their quest for Pablo Aimar’s signature.
Aimar would have been a classic Keegan signing, but alas he looks set to sign on the dotted line for Benfica, leaving the good ship Toon more of a ghost ship with a very bare squad.
Aimar, the 28-year-old Argentinian playmaker, was also a Keegan target but he is set to be unveiled as a Benfica player within the next 48 hours after Zaragoza announced last night that they had reached an accord with the Lisbon club. The fee is £7m.
As the Newcastle goalkeeper Steve Harper said yesterday: “We’re pretty depleted. We’ve lost four or five players and the dressing room is pretty sparse. New faces would give everyone a lift.” (Independent)
When King Kev first returned to Newcastle, many journo’s were busy sharpening their knives and painting him to be utterly incompetent. One vicious rumour asserted that the Toon boss only picked famous players as transfer targets – because that’s all he knows. When is Keegan going to prove the doubters wrong?
