Man City manager in chase for Liverpool winger

The Manchester Evening News reckons Liverpool wide-man Yossi Benayoun is wanted by Mark Hughes at Man City.

The former Blackburn boss has reportedly targeted Benayoun as part of his rebuilding plans at Eastlands.

Although there’s been a few mutterings that Benayoun could be surplus to requirements at Anfield since the start of the silly season, this is the first sniff of a possible bid.

With the lack of transfer funds reportedly an issue at Anfield, manager Rafa Benitez may well be keen to cash in on this valuable squad player to help finance bids for the likes of Gareth Barry or David Silva.

Benayoun joined Liverpool on a four-year contract last summer, after establishing himself as one of the country’s brightest wingers at West Ham. Despite scoring two hat-tricks in his first season, including one against Besiktas in the Champions League, Benayoun has struggled to claim a regular place in the starting line-up.

The Evening News reckons Benayoun is determined to stay and fight for his place at Anfield, but doesn’t back up this statement with any comment from the player himself.

Personally, I’d like to see the Israeli winger remain at Anfield. His creativity and goals made a significant if not substantial contribution last season. He’s a player with pace and flair, and someone who can change the nature of a game coming off the bench.

Bottom line: Keep Benayoun, sell Jermaine Pennant.
