Holland have been the surprise package of Euro 2008 and it’s no surprise to hear that a couple of Premier League clubs are in the hunt for one of their first-team players. Sky Sports report that Everton and Newcastle are extremely interested in acquiring the signature of Orlando Engelaar, the Twente midfielder who has impressed for the Dutch this summer.
Speaking exclusively to Skysports.com, Engelaar’s agent Eduard Burleson confirmed the interest from England – but admitted talks with Schalke are at an advanced stage.
“We have spoken with Schalke and terms have been agreed,” Burleson told skysports.com.
“But the two clubs have not agreed yet, and so that is where we stand on that..”
“I know Everton are interested and that Newcastle could soon make a move,” he continued.
Could the Toffees or Magpies beat Schalke to Engelaar’s signature? He looks like the sort of player that could benefit both teams, providing protection to the back four with his ability to break up attacks and distribute the ball to attacking players. It’s almost a surprise to hear that other clubs aren’t in for the Dutchman.
