In addition to Gareth Barry, there’s lots of speculation over Rafa Benitez’s supposed transfer targets. However, one player that the Spaniard was definitely interested in bringing to Anfield was none other than Maik Taylor.
For the uninitiated, Taylor plays for Birmingham City and the official Blues website reveals that Liverpool wanted him as back-up for Pepe Reina next season. Perhaps it’s a little odd that the Northern Irishman didn’t jump at the chance to play a handful of times in front of the Kop, although credit is also due for the loyalty demonstrated towards his current club.
“With an offer on the table from the club (Birmingham), it was always going to be the case that I would stay really,” Taylor said.
“It was flattering that Liverpool showed a lot of interest and of course I gave it serious consideration.
“Liverpool could offer the UEFA Champions League and everything else, but it would have been a situation as a No.2 and a year’s contract as well.
“Scott Carson has gone back there now as well. There was talk of him going to Villa after his loan, but that has not materialised.
“I still have a big desire to play and, as long as I keep my form and fitness, that’s more likely here (Birmingham).”
Perhaps Carson will now stay at Liverpool, although surely Benitez would prefer to offload the young keeper for a few million and draft someone in like Taylor on the cheap? After all, there seems little point having such a talented stopper on the books and only fielding him on a handful of occasions.
