Is Jermain Jenas better than Michael Carrick? Fabio Capello believes this to be the case at the present time, removing the latter from his trimmed-down England squad and keeping the Spurs midfielder in the pack of twenty-three. The Daily Telegraph report that the Manchester United midfielder is the highest profile player to miss out on England’s match against Switzerland next week.
Others to be removed at this juncture include Stewart Downing, Curtis Davies and Glen Johnson, although Gabriel Agbonlahor will be delighted to have survived the cull and now has a very real chance of earning his first England cap on Wednesday.
Capello said: “I want to be clear that the players who have not made the squad this time are still part of my plans.” The squad meet at their Watford hotel tomorrow, with Capello naming a captain for the game the following day.”
Is the Italian right to remove Carrick from his squad? It’s hardly encouraging for the former West Ham and Spurs player, especially when Frank Lampard is sure to come in ahead of him after recovering from injury.
