The BBC reckons that a group of Liverpool fans are formulating plans to wrest control of the club from the greasy paws of Gillett and Hicks by creating a ‘member share’ scheme similar to the one at Barcelona. Rogan Taylor, director of the Football Industry Group at the University of Liverpool and someone at the forefront of this proposed scheme said:
“The time is right to offer a different solution to the rising concerns that football fans have about the patterns of ownership developing at our major football clubs,”
Details are sketchy, but the BBC reports that the plan is to raise £500m to buy the club from Gillett and Hicks and build a swanky new stadium; whispers of ‘an investment per supporter of £5,000 each’ are also being mentioned too. So is this the best way to ensure that Liverpool Football Club is controlled by the people that love it the most?
