Tiago might not have to stagnate himself at Juventus for the rest of the season after all. After talks with the English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur fell through a couple of day ago, the 27-year old Portuguese midfielder is now being strongly linked with Spanish giants Atletico Madrid.
Goal.com quotes Atletico’s manager Javier Aguirre telling the Madrid based sports daily Marca as talks between the two clubs have indeed taken place but has denied that any conclusion has been reached yet. Aguirre said:
They have told me that they have spoken to four or five players; Suso (sport director Jesús García Pitarch) passed me a list yesterday and asked my opinion on the players. The team lacks enough players, because every Sunday we have an injury, a problem or a suspension. We have just 23, including three goalkeepers for three competitions. I like the good football players and [Tiago] is a good football player. I have always liked players that know how to pass the ball and are also good for the team. I like good people and good football players. That would be the ideal. Good people for the shirt, who work and put themselves on the line; good football players. The club made a big investment at the start of the league and I have already said to Pitarch, Cerezo and Gil Marín that I would understand if they don’t want to make another outlay, because they have already made a huge investment and it is a great team and club in general.
Atletic are going strong in La Liga and after many, many seasons it appears the Atleti will ultimately grab a UEFA Champions league spot.
