Portuguese ace Luis Figo is in his mid 30s and has firmly established himself as one of the greatest footballers of all time. Yet he has no dearth of offers on the table for a new club even though he is sticking to his current employers Inter Milan for the rest of the season.
According to this report from ESPN Soccernet, Figo is not expressing any urgency to leave the Italian champions and current Serie A leaders. The 35-year old former captain of the Portuguese national side denies that he has decided on a move to the MLS at the end of the season when his contract runs out with Inter.
This is what Figo told in a news conference in Dubai where Roberto Mancini has engaged his players in a mid-season training camp:
I don’t like talking about suppositions. I’m not considering the possibility at the moment because I have other things on my mind.
Figo is one of the few creative players in this largely pragmatic and unromantic Inter Milan side that is likely to retain the scudetto that it clinched in so dominating a fashion last season. He broke his leg in November and there were a few cries that the player might be thinking of terminating his playing career.
Figo had earlier been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia. So much so that in January 2007, there were reports in the Italian press stating that the former FIFA World Player and European Player of the Year winner has signed a deal with an Arab club for an astronomical amount. But the move broke down as Inter managed to convince Figo that he was still needed in the blue-and-black half of Milan.
Should Figo indeed make a Stateside move in the summer like his former Real Madrid did, then he would yet another old and spent European force going to the US for some easy money. Will it help raise the profile of football in the US? Unlikely but still maybe it could spark an active interest.
