Southampton midfielder Victor Wanyama believes Champions League football is an achievable target for the club in the next few years, according to BBC Sport.

The 22-year-old has previously starred in Europe’s top club competition for former club Celtic, scoring in a famous 2-1 victory over Spanish giants Barcelona last season in one of many displays that caught the eye of top clubs in the transfer market this summer.

The likes of Arsenal and Manchester United were said to be keen on Wanyama before he made the £12.5m move to Southampton, but he believes he has made a good choice in his move, and believes that he will be playing Champions League football again soon at the St Mary’s Stadium.

“I believe one day Champions League football is achievable at Southampton,” he said.

“Everything step by step and I believe one day we will be also there.”

The club only made it back to the Premier League after a seven-year absence last year, but have made a remarkable rise since then under exciting new manager Mauricio Pochettino, who has adopted an entertaining and attack-minded style of play at the club.

The Kenyan international was one of several exciting signings made by the Saints this summer, with Italian international striker Pablo Osvaldo arriving for a club-record £15m deal from Serie A side Roma.
