Belgian defender keen to stay at Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen has insisted that he will fight for his future at the club, according to The Mirror.

The Belgian centre back arrived last summer from Ajax with a reputation as one of the best defenders on the continent.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger was so impressed with the player that he made Vermaelen the club captain shortly after his arrival.

But the player has struggled for form this season and has failed to impress following some inconsistent displays.

Wenger finally lost patience with his backline for their erratic displays after the 2-1 North London derby defeat to Tottenham and has reportedly vowed to shake things up for next season.

The club have since been linked with the likes of Swansea’s Ashley Williams and Marseille’s Nikolas N’Koulou but Vermaelen has stated he is determined to fight for his place in the team.

Vermaelen already finds himself behind Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny in the Emirates pecking order but the Belgian is reportedly unfazed by the challenge that lies ahead of him.

Reports in recent weeks had suggested that Barcelona could offer Vermaelen an escape route from Arsenal.

The Catalan giants were thought to be ready to bring in Vermaelen as a replacement for the ageing Carlos Puyol but it now appears the defender is set to stay in North London.
