Manchester United have failed in their bid for Roma and Greece centre-back Kostas Manolas.

According to the Metro via the Daily Star, Roma have rejected a £28 million bid from Man United for the 25-year-old Greek centre-back.

Per the source, Chelsea also expressed interest in the star centre-back, with manager Antonio Conte reportedly a big fan of the Roma defender.

Manolas started 44 of 45 appearances for Roma and was featured heavily in their Champions League bid this past season – playing all 720 of their group stage run. He has played in 250 games in all club competitions since making his debut with Thrasyvoulos in the the 2008-09 Greek Super League season.

Man United fielded one of the top defenses in the Premier League last season, allowing a league-fewest 35 goals all season despite losing star defender Luke Shaw early in the year. Earlier this summer Man United added Villarreal defender Eric Bailley to their ranks as the first signing of the Jose Mourinho era.
