If Mesut Ozil didn’t have enough trophies and accolades to last several lifetimes, he might be a tad upset with Arsenal teammate Francis Coquelin after the French midfielder decided to snub him in the voting for Premier League Player of the Year.
In an interview with the Evening Standard, Coquelin announced that he decided to pick Leicester City midfielder Riyad Mahrez as his choice for league MVP as opposed to Ozil – who is also a top candidate for the prestigious award.
“I voted for Riyad Mahrez, even if I had that little put with him when we played them,” Coquelin said.
“It’s funny actually because I met him on the train the other day when he was heading to international duty and he was saying ‘why did you push me off the pitch?’ But we were both laughing about it.
“To be honest though he’s having a great season, so I chose him.”
Mahrez has a very strong case to be made for sure. He is tied with Sergio Aguero for fourth in the league in goals with 16 and has 11 assists – second behind Ozil.
The German winger, however, has a very strong case for the MVP as well, as his 18 assists are among the highest in all of European football. However, he only has five goals of his own.
Once deemed a lock for the MVP, oddsmakers have dropped Ozil all the way to fourth at 20/1, behind Mahrez (4/9), Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy (13/8) and Tottenham Hotspur forward Harry Kane (8/1).
