The 25 year old has played every minute of the Reds Premier League campaign but his side have so far only kept one clean sheet, meaning Brendan Rodgers side haven’t been able to keep pace with Chelsea, who currently sit at the top of the table.

Lovren admits he has had a mixed start to life at Anfield.

“It is a tough job because I am a new player.

“It is not so easy to lead all the time. I was used to other players leading before but I have the confidence in myself and I am ready for it.

“I am just 25 and the thing is I need to improve in every game as a person and as a player.

“I am giving my best, which is the most important thing. With the time and the games it will come.”

Liverpool’s sloppiness saw them drop points at the weekend, losing 1-0 to Aston Villa at Anfield.

The 18 time league champions lost last season’s Premier League title race partly because they were poor at the back.

Rodgers men will need to get better defensively soon if they are to challenge for silverware domestically and in Europe.
