The 25-year-old’s contract with the Turkish giants was set to expire at the end of the month and the Premier League giants had been linked with moves for his signature having both becoming in need of new reinforcements in that position.

A number of top European clubs had also been shooing an interest in his services, and an exit looked ever more likely.

However, those interested parties have all been dealt a blow after learning that he has now put pen-to-paper on a fresh contract extension to stay in Istanbul.

A Fenerbahce statement read: “We have reached an agreement-in-principle with our player Caner Erkin, we will release further information of the deal.”

Liverpool, though, are said to be close to completing a deal to sign Sevilla’s young left-back Alberto Moreno in a deal worth around £17.5m.

Chelsea, meanwhile, are pondering whether to offer a short term extension to veteran defender Ashley Cole, whose contract also expires at the end of the month.
