Arsenal ready bid for £20m-rated defender after losing out on Mats Hummels

Amidst issues with their centre-back position for the bulk of the season, Arsenal are looking into increasing their options at the position this summer. After missing out on Mats Hummels this past week, the Gunners are shifting their attention to someone closer to home: Swansea City defender Ashley Williams.

According to the Express, Arsenal are weighing up a bid of £20 million to bring the Swans’ veteran to Emirates Stadium next year. Williams is a 14-year veteran of English football and is currently on a four-year contract with Swansea.

The Wales defender has made over 300 appearances for Swansea during his nine-year tenure with the club, helping them secure promotion to the Championship division in 2008 and then the Premier League in 2011.

Arsenal were one of the many suitors for Borussia Dortmund centre-back Mats Hummels, but the German defender ultimately chose to return to his former club Bayern Munich in a major transfer move last week.
