Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann has reportedly put pen-to-paper on a one-year extension with the La Liga giants.
The French international is currently preparing for Euro 2016 with Les Bleus, and he is expected to play an influential role for the hosts in their bid to win the tournament.
However, that hasn’t prevented reports circulating regarding his club future, with suggestions that he has signed a new deal, although it is yet to be officially confirmed by either the club or the player.
According to L’Equipe, the deal has been reached after several days of negotiations with the 25-year-old eventually agreeing to adding another year onto his contract which in turn ties him to the club until 2021.
At this stage, it’s unclear as to whether this is simply a deal that extends Griezmann’s stay at the club with both parties keen on seeing out their partnership together.
In contrast, it could well be a strategy from Atleti to put themselves in a stronger position if their European rivals look to test their resolve later this summer.
Nothing is expected to now happen until after Euro 2016, and it could all be irrelevant if the French media have jumped the gun and reported on a deal that doesn’t even exist.
While it would be reassuring to see the 25-year-old continue to stay loyal to Diego Simeone’s side and help guide them to further success, it would come as no surprise if the La Liga outfit are ultimately putting safeguards in place to command a substantial transfer fee if they are convinced that they’ll have to sell.
